Racetrack Playa Sunset (Death Valley N.P.)
Racetrack Playa Sunset – Who said photographing rocks isn’t exhilarating? Those people must not be photographers. Or nature lovers. Because seeing this amazing natural phenomenon is mind boggling. It just made me appreciate the wonders of nature even more than I had before. And then getting to photograph it … well, that was just awesome.
I knew visiting this location for the first time would be amazing, but I didn’t realize that I would fall in love with a few of the rocks, including the one in this particular image. I captured it during the late afternoon when I first arrived and tagged it in my GPS, to ensure I could come right back to it for sunset. I felt the position of the sun (via photopills app) and this rocks shape, potential shadow and racetrack would provide for an interesting composition and strong image. Let me know what you think.
If you’ve never been to the Racetrack, I highly recommend planning a trip out to the Playa the next time you visit Death Valley. And if you don’t have a 4x4, just spend the money and rent the jeep from Farabee’s Jeep Rental. They're literally right next to the Furnace Creek Campground and you’ll be extremely happy that you’re using their vehicle to drive down the road to Racetrack. It’s 27 miles on a REALLY ROUGH road.
